Northern Area Regional Contest 2006
Welcome to the Barton Town Band
Northern Area Regional
Champions 2006
On a cold late winter’s morning in March, the twenty eight musicians of the Barton Town Band made
the journey to Darlington to compete in the 2006 Northern Area Regional Contest.  It has been
fifteen years since the band had competed in this ranking event.  But since the bands rebirth last
year the band has found a renewed energy and things are going very well.
The Chairman and his committee thought a re-visit was long overdue.  To assist us in our task we
managed to persuade Mark Bentham to conduct the band a great privilege for us as Marks Band
'Hepworth' are ranked 15th in the World,
The British Bansmen Challenge Tribute Cup
The performance went very well and confidence grew as we heard the other bands perform.
The time for the results drew nearer anticipation deepened and excitement grew as the placing
counted down from fourth to First. Then these words came from the contest controllers lips.
‘The band that came first with 182 point, winning the northern area 4th section and holding the
British Bandsman Challenge Tribute Cup, an invitation to the national finals in Harrogate is the
band that were drawn 4th The Barton Town Band’

A perfect ending to a perfect day.

But don't take our word for it please use this link to read
4.barsrest.com's review on the contest and the results.
For the past three months
the band had been working
very hard with our resident
Conductor Gary Oglesby to
perfect the test piece
‘Anglian Dances’ by Alan
Fernie and at 11-30 it was
our turn to perform in front
of the composer himself.
The competition was stiff
with band from all over the
Northern area which
stretches from North
Lincolnshire to the Scottish
Borders competing for the
chance to represent this
region in the National
Finals in Harrogate on
Sunday 24th September.
