Steve Rudhall was born in Wanganui, a city of about 40,000 on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island, he
started to play the Cornet at the age of 7. Initially being taught by his father, Steve was soon able to join the junior
band, 'Wanganui City Brass'. Graduating to their senior band at the age of 13, Steve began to be tutored by the
band's conductor - Kevin Jarrett. Kevin is one of New Zealand's greatest cornettists, he had been on many
occasions Principal Cornet of the National band of New Zealand. But now as a conductor, Kevin raised the
standard of the band, which soon reached the 'A' Grade (the equivalent of the British Championship Section)
Not resting on his laurels, the following years saw him being selected as Principal Cornet of the National Youth Band of
New Zealand in 1988, being selected for the National Band of New Zealand in 1989, and becoming the Open Cornet
Champion of New Zealand in 1992. As well as these achievements Steve also found time to qualify as a Chartered
Accountant.
Steve came over to the United Kingdom with the Wangaui City Brass to perform at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo the
band returned to New Zealand but Steve stayed for another six years working in London, and playing for the Hillingdon
Band at the time being conducted by Philip Sparke. It was during this time that Steve met Alice who had also joined the
band, and they were married in 1998, in Harrow.
Upon moving back to New Zealand in 1999, Steve and Alice both joined Nelson City Brass, and whilst playing with
them, Steve again became the Cornet Champion of New Zealand in 2002, and again in 2005. After this stay in New
Zealand, Steve and Alice have returned again to the United Kingdom, as Steve has been seconded to Caistor, to take
up a position with Sealord Caistor Limited, a subsidiary of New Zealand's largest seafood company.
But still wanting to play with a brass band Steve was very pleased when he was invited to become the Principal Cornet
of the East Yorkshire Motor Services Brass Band. A position he still holds to this day.

the positives that that
brings - high standard

motivational conductor and

starting lessons with Kevin,
Steve had at the age of 14,
won the New Zealand
