Welcome to the Barton Town Band
The Barton Town Band is a contesting band consists of 25 players of brass
instruments and 3 percussion players. For concerts and other engagements these
numbers do vary slightly.

We are totally self supporting and all members give their time. We are all
enthusiastic and enjoy playing together as a hobby. The Band is managed by a
committee, which organises all the necessary concerts, contests, fund raising events,
the purchase of instruments and of course the numerous social activities.

It is said that a Brass Band can present a wider repertoire than virtually any other
music ensemble. Our band can certainly provide the inspiring sound of brass to
enhance any function.  Listening to a good Brass Band is, a thrilling experience with
immediate impact, its fresh quality is unique and the many and varied articulations in
tone textures and moods give considerable scope for a desirable "picture in sound".

The Band's repertoire is varied, consisting of popular tunes, arrangements from
musicals, classical pieces, marches, and pieces especially composed for Brass Bands.

If you would like the Barton Town Band to play at your function or event please
contact Jonathan Evison our Chairman on the above details, he is always happy to
supply you with any further information you may require.
We usually  take refreshment
after our practices and
engagements in the Corn
Exchange Club, which is in
the Market Place in Barton.

The first band in Barton was the Hall's Ropery Band which operated from the mid
1880's. Very little is known about this ensemble other than its name.

In 1904 Mr F Hopper Snr formed the Barton Cycle Works Silver Band. This Edwardian
band had many successes in competition, the most notable being the Contest held at
the Crystal Palace in London where they gained a 3rd and 4th place in the years
around 1907.

Unfortunately on another occasion they had a few too many trips to the Public Bar and
acted with an "unfortunate lack of sobriety" disgracing themselves on the contest
platform. This caused their sponsor, F Hopper to gather them in the Cycle Works yard
confiscating their instruments before burning there uniforms in front of them, an
inglorious end to a once fine band.

This was not the end however, for another band was formed called Barton Town Prize
Subscription Brass Band, again a very successful band. In 1938 this band competed at
the Belle Vue contest held in Manchester, and won. Upon their return to Barton they
found themselves at the Railway station at 11.30pm. Not wanting to go home with a
feeling of anticlimax, the band formed up and marched through the town. This
impromptu performance was greeted by a large part of the community turning out to
cheer them home.

After the war their success continued-under the Musical Direction of Mr G J Benson this
Band thankfully shortened its name to Barton Town Prize Band and in the 1950's gained
competition success winning the 4th section area finals and then gained 2nd place in
the finals when they competed in the 2nd section a few years later.

Following a short amalgamation in the 1960's with Barrow Brittania Band the present
name began to be used. This band concentrated on introducing young people to Brass
Banding and in the 1970's, under the direction of Mr S Stunnel, had many successes on
the contest platform.
